Ethereum spot ETFs deserve a different lens, because Ether is not just Bitcoin with a different logo. It's a programmable asset that can generate native yield through staking, and it sits at the center of DeFi collateral flows. A spot Ethereum ETF gives you price exposure, but it generally does not give you the economic full stack: no validator yield, no ability to bridge, and no ability to use ETH as working collateral.
In exchange, it gives you conventional account access and cleaner operational overhead. The current U.S. spot ether lineup is broad. Post-waiver expense ratios commonly cluster around the low-0.20% range, but there are meaningful outliers.
ETF.com's list includes: Grayscale Ethereum Mini Trust (ETH) at 0.15% post-waiver, Franklin Ethereum ETF (EZET) at 0.19% post-waiver, VanEck Ethereum ETF (ETHV) at 0.20%, Bitwise Ethereum ETF (ETHW) at 0.20%, 21Shares Core Ethereum ETF (CETH) at 0.21%, Fidelity Ethereum Fund (FETH) at 0.25%, iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA) at 0.25% post-waiver with a lower fee during the waiver period, and Invesco Galaxy Ethereum ETF (QETH) at 0.25%. Grayscale Ethereum Trust (ETHE) remains the high-fee outlier at 2.50%.
A clean way to think about Ethereum products is to ask one question: are you buying ETH exposure for beta, or are you buying it for the Ethereum economic engine? If it's beta—macro sensitivity, risk-on/risk-off correlation, or portfolio rebalancing—a spot ETF can make sense.
If it's the engine—staking yield, on-chain liquidity provisioning, or DeFi strategy implementation—an ETF is structurally incomplete. A concrete scenario makes the difference obvious. Imagine a portfolio manager who wants to rebalance monthly in a retirement wrapper and doesn't want custody overhead: an etf with cryptocurrency exposure can be operationally superior.
Now flip it: a developer-turned-trader who moves collateral across chains, posts ETH into a lending protocol, and hedges with on-chain perps. For that person, ETF coin exposure is a one-way mirror—you get price, but you lose the composability that creates edge.
